Open Structures - Reciprocity of Form

Die Installation ‚Open Structures - Reciprocity of Form‘ besteht aus Spiegelkacheln mit 20cm Kantenlänge und nimmt Bezug auf das Raster der Terrakottafliesen im Ausstellungsraum. In gleichmäßiger Anordnung befinden sich Module aus jeweils vier senkrecht und im rechten Winkel aufgestellten Spiegeln. Innerhalb dieser rigiden, repetitiven Struktur fehlen einzelne Spiegelpaare, so dass Variationen entstehen. In den gespiegelten Oberflächen wird das Raster parallel, jedoch leicht versetzt zu den Fliesenfugen fortgesetzt. Der Titel ‚Open Structures - Reciprocity of Form‘ bezieht sich auf Ideen des Strukturalismus in der Architektur. Herman Hertzberger begründete in den 1960er Jahren eine partizipatorische Architektur mit offenem Ausgang, die von den Nutzern mitgestaltet werden kann.  Die Architekten entwickeln demnach eine Grundstruktur mit Modulen, die durch Multiplikation und Variation der Module auf soziale und funktionale Zusammenhänge reagieren kann. Die Offenheit der Struktur und die Partizipation der Nutzer ermöglichen einen stetigen Wandel oder ein Wachstum der Architektur.

The installation 'Open Structures - Reciprocity of Form' consists of mirror tiles with an edge length of 20 cm and refers to the grid of terracotta tiles in the exhibition space. Modules of four mirrors, each arranged vertically and at right angles, are arranged evenly. Within this rigid, repetitive structure, individual pairs of mirrors are missing, creating variations. In the mirrored surfaces, the grid is continued parallel to, but slightly offset from, the tile joints. The title 'Open Structures - Reciprocity of Form' refers to the ideas of structuralism in architecture. In the 1960s, Herman Hertzberger founded participatory architecture with an open outcome that could be co-designed by the users.  Accordingly, architects develop a basic structure with modules that can react to social and functional contexts by multiplying and varying the modules. The openness of the structure and the participation of the users enable constant change or growth of the architecture.
